As the title suggests, this special issue, edited by Cornelia Klecker and Sascha Pöhlmann, explores and reimagines the "flyover" trope. Frequently deployed in discourses of polarization, it can also be an instrument to explain these polarizations, and that is what we are interested here. This issue is a complementary companion piece to a book project: a collection of essays titled Flyover Fictions: Polarization in US-American Culture, Media, and Politics (U of Nebraska P, forthcoming in 2025). Here, we focus on more contemporary aspects and the application (rather than the theorization) of flyover and thus a more practical methodology.
